RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Project Completed
Evaluation of Indigenous and Imported MCBs

This internal Project was taken up at the instance of IEEMA at a cost of Rs. 12,000/- to compare the performance of 32 A, SP 240 V Indian MCBs with few imported ones.  During the year different makes of MCBs were studied for their Dielectric properties, 28 day test and all other critical tests including short circuit test.

It was observed that the indigenous make MCBs manufactured by medium scale industries meet the requirements of short circuit breaking capacity while the tested imported make MCBs do not clear S.C requirements.  The performance of indigenous make MCBs is superior to the performance of tested imported make MCBs.  The average cost of 32A indigenous MCB is in the range of Rs. 99 to 102 and that of the imported MCB is Rs. 61 to Rs. 125. The project has been completed and report submitted to IEEMA.

Ageing Studies on Polymeric insulators with and without surface coatings

This Project was sponsored by M/s Crompton Greaves at a cost of Rs. 3.00 lakhs.  The project aimed at investigating weathering properties of 11 kV Polymer concrete post insulators under laboratory simulated conditions and to study the effect of surface coatings on the performance of polymer concrete insulators under polluted conditions.  This project was completed and final report sent to sponsoring organization.

Project Proposed
Fault Location in Transformer and Other Electrical Equipment

The aim of this project is to analyse frequency responses of Transformer using high frequency signal to detect fault during impulse test using Wavelet for frequency Analysis of impulse voltage and neutral current and to remove noise from Partial Discharge pulse using Wavelet Analysis and Pattern recognition of different fault types. The estimated cost of this project is Rs. 3.8 lakhs.

Correlation between the Acoustic Emission (AE) Method and Conventional Electrical Method for Partial Discharge Detection in High Voltage Equipment

This project aims at establishing a correlation between newly developed Acoustic Emission Method (AEM) as against conventional method of detecting, measuring and locating Partial Discharge Sources in High Voltage Equipment. The estimated project cost is Rs. 1.5 lakhs.
