NEW FACILTIES
Development of 15 kV Low Voltage Impulse Generator

ERDA has developed a 15 kV low voltage impulse generator, which meets the requirements of specification IS:13779-1999 and IEC 61000-4-5-2001.  The important specifications, features and areas of applications are as under:

Specification:

Ø       Input Voltage : 230V ac 50 Hz.

Ø       Output Voltage Peak : 15 kV peak

Ø       Open circuit waveform characteristic (load greater than or equal to 10 K ohm)

Ø       Front time : 1.2 microseconds ± 30%
Ø       Time to half value : 50  microseconds ± 20%

Ø       Short circuit waveform characteristics (load smaller or equal to  0.1 0hm)
Ø       Front time : 8 microseconds ± 20%
Ø       Time to half value : 20 microseconds ± 20%

Ø       Effective output impedance : 2 ohms.

Features:

Ø       Compact Design

Ø       Fully safe operation due to protected panel

Ø       Positive and negative polarity pulse selection

Ø       Solenoid operated sphere gap for trigger

Ø       Display by digital kV meter

Ø       Charging capacitor discharge facility provided inside after operation

Application:

For testing of Energy Meters, Electrical Transducers and Relays.

This technology has been transferred to M/s. Rectifiers and Electronics, New Delhi for commercialization.

Development of Luminaire for compact Fluorescent lamps

ERDA has designed and developed Energy Efficient luminaire for compact fluorescent lamps.  The luminaire was tested as per IS:13383-1982.  The reflector design is based on the concept of general contour.  The efficiency achieved is 80%, which is higher than those locally available luminaires for CFL.

Development of submersible pump set with higher overall efficiency

ERDA has developed higher efficiency submersible pump set.

The specifications, features and areas of applications are:

Specification:

Rating   :                       7.5 kW, 415V / 320 V
Head     :                       90 m
Discharge:                     5 lps.
Current:                         15.6A/20A
Speed:                          2880 rpm.
Size:                             150x 65 mm, 10 stages
Overall Efficiency:          53%
Motor efficiency :           82%

Salient Features

Ø       The developed 7.5 kw (10 hp) submersible pumpset meets the requirement of the IS:8034

Ø       The developed 10 hp submersible pumpset operates at lower voltage of 320V (-15%) without drop in the efficiency values

Ø       The efficiency values of submersible motors at 415V and 320V are compatible with imported makes motors.  The efficiency values are constant from 75% load to 110% load

Ø       The efficiency curves are having flat characteristics as stated above.  Hence any small change in the operating point will not affect the efficiency

Ø       The present day overall efficiency of the existing 10 hp submersible pumpset having same duty point of 90 m head and 300 lpm, 10 stage is around 46% (As per IS:8034-2002 the overall efficiency is 44.1%).  The achieved overall efficiency of upgraded 10 hp submersible pumpset is 53%.

Major Advantages

Ø       The overall increase in overall efficiency achieved is 7% from the existing values.  The approximate units consumed by the 10 hp pumpset in Gujarat is 4352 MU.  Hence if all of them are replaced by the upgraded pumpset, the no. of units saved are 304 MU.  This saves energy cost of Rs. 92 crores and peak demand of 300 MW.

Ø       The manufacturing cost of the upgraded 10 hp submersible pumpset comes out to be Rs. 16,000/-.  Which can be further reduced on mass production of the pumpset.  The manufacturing cost of the existing 10 hp submersible pumpset is around Rs. 13,000/-.  This extra investment of Rs. 3000/- can be recovered through savings in the energy cost.  The payback period worked out is 5 months.  The amount saved per month is Rs. 684/- (The energy cost considered is Rs. 3/- per unit and pump is considered to be running for 6 hours per day).

Ø       The current drawn by the motor is very less compared with the existing pumpsets of same rating.  Hence the temperature rise of the windings of motors is very less, which in turn increase the life of motor.  The tilting type thrust bearings is used, which also adds to the life of the motor.

TEST FACILITY DEVELOPMENT

EMI/EMC Testing Laboratory

The Test facilities in this laboratory are strengthened to cover following important tests.

Ø       Automatic interference measurement as per CISPR – 22 to cover frequency range from 30 MHz to 2.75 GHz and testing as per IEC 61000-4-6 to cover frequency  range from 150 kHz to 250 MHz for all three level.

The equipment used for above are :

Ø       Receiver of R&S German make, Turn Table, EMCO, USA make  Mast, Emco USA make, Generator, EM Test Switzerland make.

ERDA can provide solution for Energy Meters not meeting the EMI/EMC test requirements.  ERDA has provided such solutions to M/s. Duke Arnics Electronics Ltd., Hyderabad.

Liquid Dielectric Laboratory

New test facilities are added in the Liquid Dielectric Lab for the evaluation of lubricating oils as per various IP standards.
